ROI Calculator

Return on investment (ROI) measures gain or loss relative to the amount invested. It is a simple way to compare investments of different sizes.

How to use the ROI Calculator

  1. Enter the amount invested and the final value.
  2. Optionally enter years held.
  3. Read ROI and annualized ROI.

How it works

ROI % = (Final value − Initial investment) ÷ Initial investment × 100. Annualized ROI = (Final ÷ Initial)^(1/years) − 1, which makes investments held for different periods comparable.

Worked example

Invest 200,000 and end with 290,000 after 3 years: ROI 45%, annualized ROI about 13.2%.

Good to know

ROI ignores risk and, unless annualized, the time it took to earn the return.

Include fees and taxes in the final value for a realistic figure.

Use annualized ROI to compare different time periods.
