Salary Slip Format and Components Explained
A salary slip lists the employer and employee, the pay period, earnings (basic, allowances, bonus), deductions (retirement contribution, tax, other) and the net pay. Net pay = gross earnings − total deductions.
What a salary slip is
It is a monthly statement of what an employee earned and what was deducted. Banks, landlords and visa offices often ask for recent slips as income proof.
Typical components
- Basic pay: The core fixed salary.
- Allowances: House rent, transport and similar additions.
- Bonus / other earnings: Variable pay.
- Retirement contribution: Employee share of provident fund or pension.
- Income tax deducted: Tax withheld at source.
- Net pay: Amount credited to the bank.
Example
Basic 50,000 plus allowances 20,000 gives gross 70,000. A 12% contribution on basic is 6,000, tax 3,000, so net pay is 61,000.
