Hash Generator (SHA)

A cryptographic hash turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and a tiny change gives a completely different one.

How to use the Hash Generator (SHA)

  1. Type text or choose a file.
  2. Read the SHA hashes.
  3. Copy the one you need.

How it works

SHA-256 produces 256 bits (64 hex characters); SHA-512 produces 512 bits (128 hex characters). Hashing is one-way: you cannot recover the input from the hash.

Worked example

The SHA-256 of an empty string begins e3b0c442….

Good to know

Use hashes to verify file integrity against a published checksum.

Do not store passwords with a plain SHA hash; use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.

MD5 is omitted because it is broken for security uses.

Frequently asked questions

A 256-bit cryptographic hash function from the SHA-2 family.

Not directly; it is one-way, though weak inputs can be guessed.

No, hashing happens in your browser.
