Base64 Encoder/Decoder

Base64 represents binary or text data using 64 ASCII characters so it can travel safely through systems that only handle text, such as JSON, email and URLs.

How to use the Base64 Encoder/Decoder

  1. Paste text or Base64.
  2. Click Encode or Decode.
  3. Copy the output.

How it works

Every 3 bytes become 4 characters from A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /, padded with =. URL-safe Base64 swaps + and / for - and _ and drops padding.

Worked example

“BillGen” encodes to QmlsbEdlbg==.

Good to know

Base64 is encoding, not encryption; anyone can decode it.

It increases size by about 33%.

The tool is UTF-8 safe, so accented letters and emoji work.

Frequently asked questions

No. It only changes representation and offers no secrecy.

Padding makes the length a multiple of 4.

A variant using - and _ instead of + and /.

BillGen provides general-purpose tools; verify important outputs before relying on them.
